Project Hail Mary
May 18, 2026I read the book quite a while ago. From what I can remember, the movie hits the main points. I was really disappointed the alien was in all the trailers. I get he's a big part of the appeal. Rocky is the comedy, the heart, the hope. Who wants to watch one guy trying to survive by himself in one room for 2 hours? But if Rocky wasnt in the trailers then the tension wouldve been higher during the first contact scene. THe author also said that he believes his work has no social commentary which is crazy. Its definitely less in the movie but its always in art, even if you want it there or not. The struggle to survive unites people. Both Rocky and Grace sacrificing themselves for each other? Sience and love will save us? Sacrificing for the greater good? Finding home with people who care about you, doing what you love?
Another note I've seen online is that Dr. Grace is asexual (experiencing no or low sexual attraction) and/or aromantic (experiencing no or low romantic attraction). I love that headcanon. Though its common for the nerds to get that label, beggars cant be choosers.
